The blending of rock & roll and hip hop has long been a fan favorite in the U.S. From Linkin Park to Gym Class Heroes to the many collaborations between rockers and rappers dating back to Run D.M.C and Aerosmiths groundbreaking hit Walk this Way, the two very versatile genres have made a way to blend the their distinctive sounds together to bring us some of the most catchy songs to date. But the U.S. is no longer the only player of this mix; Mexico has been making some noise with its own rendition. And the pioneer in Mexico's rap rock fusion is taking its sound up north, center stage in some of America's largest cities.
Enter Molotov.
Since its start in Mexico City in 1995 Molotov had a unique sound, musically composed of electric guitar and bass drums similar to rock bands, but lyrically composed of Spanish and English words that are aggressive and politically inspired as true to rap's nature. Their songs dare to venture into controversial topics, such as inequalities in Mexico and immigration in the USA, gaining them widespread publicity throughout the country and beyond. Molotov always manages to turn raw and daring subject matters into something quite comical and entertaining, making them a quick fan favorite. Their debut album El Gringo Loco became a hit with both Spanish and English speaking audiences and paved the way for their first Grammy nomination. The group is a three-time Latin Grammy Award winner and a two-time MTV Video Music Awards Latinoamerica winner.
And after a South American and European tour, the band is kicking off the new year just right with their anticipated American tour. If you didn't catch them last Saturday in D.C. at the State Theatre check their site for future tour dates, visit http://www.molotov.com.mx/2/index.htm.
