Because We Love APTBS... 12/09/2010

APTBS
A Place To Bury Strangers were midway through a three week long, 18 show tour across Europe, when last Friday, 12/3, their van was stolen in Rome, Italy outside the BlackoutClub FROM the venue's parking lot.
The band's gear was safe in the venue, but 1000 Euros in merch money, all of their suitcases and clothes, a lot of merch (t shirts, tote bags etc.), bassist Dion Lunadon's New Zealand Passport & Green Card, the band's Macbook Pro laptop and numerous personal items and various other gear were in the van at the time of the theft.

Friends/former tourmates in Holy Fuck were kind enough to let us thank fans who donate by sending them a download of the APTBS remix of their track "Red Lights". Each person who donates will be e-mailed a link to download the remix.
Please contact Manager Steven Matrick: kepler.events@gmail.com if you have any information that could be of help in recovering any of the band's items.

This Week on Strictly Global! (12/3/10) 12/02/2010

Dawn Reed @ State Theatre
I'm gonna cut right to the chase and say that this week's video playlist would make one glorious party mix-tape. Totally, a mix-tape at a party will keep those iPod hoggers at bay and thus avoid dead air until they find that Usher song only they want to hear. Back to the point, this Friday we've got a perfect mix of abrasive British rock anthems, Danish dancey jams, Belgian grooves that defy gravity ;), David Lynch's latest femme find, and new artists that will explode into the global music scene come 2011. That's worthy of an awesome party for sure. And Brooklyn's indie pop "nintendo-gaze" group the Depreciation Guild will make an appearance in this week's interview segment. Party time.

Holy Fuck
A party wouldn't be fun without some dance action, so in the mix is Toronto's experimental electro-rock band Holy Fuck, whom can totally get the floor moving. Proof- their 3rd studio album, Latin, released this year went #14 on USA's Billboard Dance chart. Oh yeah! And even cooler, they achieve their electronic sound without the use of laptops and looping and everything you'd expect to find in an electronica set-up. Smarty party.

The Vaselines
Also making an appearance is Scotland's indie pop group the Vaselines. Originally formed back in 1986, they were kind of under the radar outside of Scotland until Nirvana's Kurt Cobain brought major exposure to them stating they were his most favorite songwriters in the whole world, on top of covering several of their tunes. Speaking of awesome covers, on the Vaselines first EP Son of a Gun, they covered "You Think You're a Man" originally by John Waters' drag protege Divine. After about 14 years, the Vaselines have released their second studio album this year, Sex With an X.

Hesta Prynn
Ok, if you can't wait to get this party started, check out the 'latest' NYC duo of Hesta Prynn, who you may know from the Long Island femme hip-hop group Northern State. Produced and co-written with Chuck Brody, Hesta Prynn released the beyond amazing EP Can We Go Wrong this past summer and are sure to go up up up come 2011. They've already gotten attention overseas from Brit's infamous mag NME, and the New York Post named her the #4 Artist to Watch in 2010. We'll say #1 Artist to Get the Party Started 2011. Holler.

So, Thanksgiving is a traditional North American holiday, but of course we figured out a way to get Jamaica, Iceland, France and more involved in our Thanksgiving Leftovers special this Friday. We raided the fridge for some scrumptious worldwide foodie videos to feed your eyeballs and ears, so put on some elastic waistband pants 'cause you're gonna get stuffed. Plus, we'll stop by Chef Eugene's Beat Kitchen where he'll show us how to turn a big T-Day leftover, mashed potatoes, into a crunchy snacky-poo, with a little help from the musical stylings of the Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band.

Bjork
We'll take a journey back in time and join Icelandic pop queen Bjork in her kitchen as she cooks up something magical, with a tune off her first solo album, Debut. This year, Bjork received the highly coveted Polar Music Prize at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music (alongside infamous soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone) which was presented to her by the King of Sweden. Holler!

Queen Ifrica
We'll also take a trek around the supermarket with Jamaica's queen of reggae, Queen Ifrica. Her songs are really relaxing, as reggae traditionally is, but if you listen to the lyrics, you'll hear the dark truth of what goes on in other parts of the vacation island not seen by tourists. Regarding her album Montego Bay, she says, "I want people who hear this record to understand what my aspirations are for this world. All that effort we put towards dispute support we can put towards solution support."

Danni Rosner @Jammin' Java
Have you checked out our contest yet? Well, are you in a band and have a music video? You better check out the homepage for details so you can submit your video and have the chance to be the first video aired in 2011! I mean, wow, that's huge. Meanwhile, this week Danni Rosner reigned in some new French Reggae, Pakistani house music, and more for your viewing/listening pleasure. And be sure to check out the interview Dawn Reed had with the Villains 21 as they recorded their latest EP of Beatles covers in the legendary Sheffield Studios.

Danakil
Named after the Ethopian desert, we'll check out the latest from French reggae group Danakil, who will be releasing their 3rd studio album in March 2011. In the recent past, they were followed by cameras for a month to document the process of putting together their distinctive sound, that which garnered them Best Reggae Album at the 2008 French Reggae Web Awards!

Nadia Ali
We'll also check out the latest from the lovely Libya-born Pakistani-American house artist, Nadia Ali. It was in the NY offices of Versace where she surprisingly got her start in the music world back in 2001. There, she met dance music producer Markus Moser, and together they created the hit "Rapture" that received world-wide praise and remixes from big house names Armin Van Buuren, Deep Dish and more.

This Week on Strictly Global! (11/12/10) 11/10/2010

Dawn Reed @ Jammin Java
Something about the music videos this week on Strictly Global hit a film nostalgia chord for me. There were two films that I watched regularly as a kid- Rubber Tarzan (an odd Danish film about dyslexia and cranes) and the French-Canadian film The Peanut Butter Solution (about ghosts, hair loss, and kidnapping.) They just don't make "family" films like those anymore- you know; the ones that mess with your head. Anyway, the point is we've got some great videos from Denmark, France and more including an interview with Canadian electro-pop artists Dragonette!

Underworld
Speaking of cinema flashbacks, we'll be featuring the latest from British electronic artists Underworld, who got major attention in the mid-90s after being featured in one of the coolest movies ever, Trainspotting. These guys go back, way back, as they've been together since about 1979! This year they released their 8th studio album Barking, which features videos for every song (always a cool bonus!) They had a few shows in the states recently in support of it- and below is a snippet from their show in DC I managed to get on my broken camera. (PS- I try to NOT be that person who holds a camera/phone up during entire shows- thus the shortness.) One of the best live shows ever.

Oh No Ono
We'll also check out the awkward coming of age video (that was too racy for our FCC guidelines to air in its true form :( ) from Denmark's psychedelic new-wave alt. pop band Oh No Ono. Their second album Eggs, was released world-wide earlier this year, and was recorded over a period of 9 months in many different locations, such as churches, factories, beaches and forests. Most excellent. They also recently released an EP, Internet Warrior, featuring pretty sweet remixes done by the Depreciation Guild, Four Tet, Caribou, and more.

Global Artists We Love: Shaa’ir +Func 11/05/2010
Arguably the most commercially successful indie bands in India right now, Shaa’ir + Func are certainly on their way to being the most prolific. Formed officially in 2007, Shaa’ir + func, commonly known as S+F, have already garnered recognition as VH1’s top emerging artists of 2007, best independent artists of 2008 (VH1), nominations from the AVIMA foundation as Best Dance Act in South-East Asia in 2009, and recognition from the Jack Daniel Rock Awards for best female front-woman of a band.
Check out this awesome video they filmed on the streets of Lokhandwala, in Khar Danda village, at their home , Mumbai.

In three years, whilst actively touring throughout India, the UK, and the East coast of the US, S+F wrote and released two commercially successful albums, New Day: The Love Album, and Light Tribe, and are currently in the final mixing stages of their third record, Mantis due to release this March. Their music includes a heavy dose of experimentation within the popular and cutting edge genres of dance/electronic/and rock music, while retaining a world pop accessibility.

Deerhunter Goes Epic With "Helicopter" 11/05/2010
From Atlanta, Deerhunter have recently released their 5th phenomenal album Halcyon Digest. Below, behold one of their singles "Helicopter" in an epic 17 minute rendering, before melding into "He Would Have Laughed", a gorgeous track about their late friend and awesome rocker, Jay Reatard.
Filmed for The Interface on spinner.com.
Earlier this year, Blonde Redhead released Penny Sparkle, their third album for 4AD and eighth in total. Joined here by Henrik Von Sivers, who worked on the new album as one half of production duo Van Rivers and The Subliminal Kid, the session sees the band offer striking interpretations of several standout tracks from the album.
The five songs were shot at Integrated Studios in Tribeca, New York on 11th August 2010 and comprise the first 4AD Session to be filmed in America. The sparse lighting creates a suitably ethereal setting, allowing the band to showcase their emotionally resonant music in an environment more intimate than fans may be accustomed to.
Blonde Redhead tour the US throughout November before joining up with Deerhunter and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti for two 4AD curated shows in Japan in January next year. More info.

SG Halloween 2010! 10/28/2010

Dawn & Danni, graveyard chillin'.
Did you know that nilbog spelled backwards is goblin? Oh my gawdy. (Troll 2, see clip at the end of this blog, and rent it now.) So yeah, it's halloween people!!! Demented Dawn and Rambo Brite return to bring you the creepiest videos from around the world and the underground (about 6 feet or so.) And Japan, Canada, and the UK sure know how to get down with that. We'll also transport into an unknown dimension with an interview from an out of this world electronic noise artist, Sicko.

Black Mountain
Kicking off the hour with a video centered around the blood moon and witchery, is the Canadian psychedelic rock group Black Mountain. They've recently released their 3rd album Wilderness Heart, and are touring North America in support of it, a la now. When not touring, a few of these dudes help out around their neighborhood through an organization that "meets the basic living requirements of the chronically poor, drug addicted and mentally ill." (Wiki.) Super sweet.

Karen Elson ((c) Kate Elson)
We'll also check out the latest from British goth-country musician Karen Elson who's had an awesome musical journey alongside a booming modeling career (and kick-ass hubby Jack White.) This year she released her first album The Ghost Who Walks, containing some songs that she sang/wrote in secret, locked in a bathroom hiding away from White. Hey, some of the most talented people are also some of the most shyest! Prior to that she's dueted with Cat Power on a Serge Gainsbourg tribute album, and performed with NYC cabaret troupe The Citizens Band, covering songs from the Velvet Underground to Leonard Cohen. Super cute.

Esben & the Witch ((c) Adam Kola)
Another UK export most deserving of a spot on any Halloween playlist is the indie-goth-electro-rockers Esben and the Witch. Not 100% sure if they got their name from the infamous Danish fairy tale, but I bet $50 it is. Anyway, this month they were nominated for a Q Award as the "Next Big Thing!" And their debut album Violent Cries is slated for an early 2011 release, so party on.

Danni @ Jammin Java
(by Dawn Reed) Hey hey hey, it's just about Friday.... So if you've got an international music video craving, prepare to binge your eyeballs out, as host Danni Rosner showcases a schmorgasboard of the latest from Italy, New Zealand, Norway, and more. I'll pop in too with an interview I had earlier this past summer with Canadian rock band, Yukon Blonde, who at that point had embarked on their first US tour, and will be doing another round in November. Now for a sneak you glutons...

Angelique Kidjo
From Benin, we've got the latest from Africa's premiere Diva (according to Time Magazine) Angelique Kidjo. Side-note: If you weren't aware, we are a teleprompterless show, and moments before the shoot, I gave Danni the daunting task of saying this talent's true name: Angélique Kpasseloko Hinto Hounsinou Kango Manta Zogbin Kidjo. Anywho, Miss Kidjo is influenced by all sorts of genres, from jazz to afropop, and is known for singing in at least 4 different languages. So, let me second Time Magazine and say, she is totally a Strictly Global Diva.

Yolanda Be Cool
We'll also check out the international chart toppers from Australia, Yolanda Be Cool. These guys sampled the 1956 Neapolitan (language of Naples, Italy) hit "Tu vou fa l'americano" in there own dance version titled "We No Speak Americano." It's gone on to top the charts in, take a deep breath, Germany, Austria, Ireland, UK, Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Australia, France, Spain, Norway, Italy, Colombia, New Zealand, Argentina, Venezuela, Costa Rica, etc etc etc. It even made it to #21 on the US Dance charts so hey... have you heard it? Well, it'll be the starter to this week's show, so be sure to tune in and find out what the rest of the world has already caught on too.
